Types of Drywall

If you want a sturdier home, installing drywall is the most inexpensive and perfect solution for you. But first, you should explore the various types of drywalls that are available.

Wallboard / Baseboard

Wallboard is the most common kind of drywall. Because of its lightness, it is often used on ceilings. It is produced by compressing gypsum plaster to create rigid sheets. These are then covered on each side with thick paper.

Water-Resistant

Water-resistant drywalls are often used in rooms that have high humidity such as bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. This is because it effectively withstands more moisture than normal drywalls. This is also often referred to as greenboard or blueboard because of its blue or green backing.

Fire-Resistant

This type of drywall is considered to be the most expensive because it is non-flammable. It is designed to withstand flames for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on its thickness. This can be used in furnace rooms, kitchens, and attached garages.

Insulated

This kind of drywall has a strong polyfoam type core. Therefore, it is effective in retaining heat for poorly insulated rooms. Because they are guaranteed not to warp, they can also be useful in areas with extreme changes in humidity.

Abuse Resistant

This type of drywall is ideal for busy areas like playrooms, basements, hallways, and garages. Usually, they are ½ to 5 or 8-inch thick. They also have an extra durable paper covering as well as a reinforced core to withstand impact.

Cement Board

Cement Board drywall composed of thin sheets of cement with layers of polymer coated glass fiber weave on either side. It is usually used in kitchens and bathrooms as support for tiling. It also provides great level of water resistance.

Fiberglass

This type of drywall is made from a humidity resistant gypsum core that is lined on both sides with fiberglass. It can better withstand water and mold than typical water-resistant drywalls.
